Somebody painted this city. Go and meet the walls.
Which Comuna 13 guide actually knows the crews. What a Belfast black cab costs before the driver starts talking. Where a graffiti workshop hands you the cans. Reviews of the street art tours you can book anywhere on earth.
Four walks that explain why people fly for paint.
A hillside in Medellin, a tiled slope in Lisbon, a black cab in Belfast and an afternoon with your own can. What each costs, and what the people who booked it say.
01The hillsideComuna 13 Graffiti Tour, Cable Car & Street FoodEscalators up the barrio, a cable-car leg and murals painted by crews who live under them. The most-booked street art tour anywhere.
02The tiled cityStreet Art TourLisbon paints on hills, on tiles and on abandoned palaces. Three hours covers Graca, Mouraria and the giant pieces above the ring road.
03The black cabMurals Taxi TourShankill and Falls in one taxi, with a driver who grew up between them. The murals are the argument, not the backdrop.
04Cans in handBrooklyn Graffiti Workshop with Local ArtistA legal wall in Brooklyn, a crate of cans and an hour with a writer who tells you why your fill looks wrong.
On foot, on two wheels, in a cab or with a can in your hand.
The same murals read completely differently at walking speed and at bike speed. Four ways to spend the afternoon, and what the cheapest seat in each costs today.

Three places where the paint is the whole reason to come.
Plenty of cities have a mural or two. A hillside reached by outdoor escalators, a warehouse yard that resets every December and a city where the gable ends argue with each other are something else.

Comuna 13
The barrio was the hardest place in the city in 2002, when Operacion Orion went through it. Outdoor escalators were built up the slope in 2011, and the crews painted the walls either side of them. Guides here are usually locals who were children during the raids, which is why the tour is half art history and half testimony, and why it outsells every other street art walk on earth.

Wynwood
Tony Goldman bought up warehouses in a written-off garment district in 2009 and turned their blank sides into a permanent outdoor gallery. Much of the neighbourhood is repainted around Art Basel each December, so a photograph from last winter is already out of date. Golf carts and buggies do the long blocks; walking tours do the alleys the carts cannot enter.

Painted politics
Northern Ireland has painted its arguments on gable ends since the 1970s, and the peace-wall gates between Shankill and Falls still shut at night. In Derry the Bogside Artists put the civil-rights years on the houses below Free Derry Corner. Black cabs remain the standard way round both cities because the driver is usually the commentary.

What an afternoon of murals actually costs.
Every tour on the site sorted by price. The cheapest guided hours cost less than the pint afterwards, and the top of the range buys a driver and a private route.
Small-group walks, tip-based alternative tours and museum entry. The bulk of the catalogue lives here.
Black cabs, golf carts, bike routes across a whole city and workshops that supply the paint.
Lisbon hands its abandoned buildings to the painters.
The city runs a street art department, gives crews whole facades on the Avenida and lets the hills do the rest. Half the good pieces are up a slope you would not climb by accident, which is the case for a guide.
Every Lisbon wall walk →Four things nobody tells you before a street art tour.
Most of this is outdoors, on foot, in whatever weather the city is having. These four are the practical facts that decide whether you enjoy the afternoon.
- 01Comuna 13 Graffiti Tour, Cable Car & Street FoodA hillside, outdoor escalators and a cable-car leg. Half a day mostly in the open, so shoes and shade matter more than anything else.
- 02Brooklyn Graffiti Workshop with Local ArtistYou are handed the cans and pointed at a legal wall. Wear clothes you would not mind ruining, because aerosol carries.
- 03Murals Taxi TourThe cab is the tour. Several operators quote the whole vehicle rather than the seat, which makes it cheap for four and dear for one.
- 04Streetart Museum STRAAT Entrance TicketIndoor paint, timed entry and a roof. The one booking on this site that is immune to weather.
